The Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade has launched a major enforcement exercise targeting illegal street trading, unauthorised structures and environmental violations across several communities in Anambra State.

The operation, carried out on Monday, covered markets and surrounding areas in Ogidi, Afor Igwe Umunnachi, Oye Agu Abagana, Nkpor and neighbouring communities.

During the exercise, operatives demolished illegal shanties and structures obstructing drainage channels while confiscating goods displayed in violation of the state’s environmental and sanitation regulations.

The agency said the operation was aimed at restoring order, protecting public infrastructure and discouraging traders and developers from occupying restricted areas, including roadsides, walkways and drainage corridors.

Speaking during the exercise, the Managing Director of the OCHA Brigade, Celestine Anere, said the crackdown formed part of the agency’s mandate to safeguard lives and ensure public spaces remain free from illegal encroachment.

He warned that roadside trading, illegal construction and the occupation of government land endanger public safety, obstruct traffic, damage the environment and undermine urban order.

Anere stressed that similar enforcement operations would continue across different parts of the state as part of the government’s efforts to maintain a clean, safe and orderly environment.

The agency advised traders and business owners to operate only within approved markets and designated trading areas, warning that violators would continue to face sanctions under Anambra State laws.
