A group of concerned leaders within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President David Mark, has urged Nigerians to join efforts aimed at removing President Bola Tinubu from office in the 2027 elections.
The call was made on Tuesday in Abuja following a closed-door meeting focused on the state of the PDP and the broader condition of the nation.
In a communiqué released after the meeting, the group appealed to all PDP members and Nigerians to unite in forming a broad-based coalition dedicated to national unity, democratic values, enhanced security, economic revival, and a robust fight against corruption.
They emphasized the need for coalition partners to develop strategies that reflect both national and local political realities, in preparation for future elections.
It expressed deep concern over the PDP’s decline since its loss in the 2023 presidential election and the resignation of Iyorchia Ayu as National Chairman.
The group expressed concern that the party has been plagued by internal divisions and a consistent disregard for its constitution, resulting in instability and a loss of strategic direction.
They also accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government of undermining democratic principles by leveraging state institutions to weaken the opposition.
Criticizing the administration’s performance, they pointed to worsening economic conditions, escalating insecurity, and what they described as a general erosion of public trust in governance.
According to the communiqué, the PDP has suffered significant setbacks, with many of its elected officials defecting under pressure, intimidation, and the lure of political patronage from the ruling party.
The meeting concluded with a strong call for urgent measures to rebuild the PDP, restore stability, regain public confidence, and ensure effective leadership for the country.
Notable attendees included former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido; former PDP National Chairman Uche Secondus; former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu; former Ebonyi Governor Sam Egwu; former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal; and former Cross River Governor Liyel Imoke.
This gathering is part of a broader trend of opposition figures coming together to strategize ahead of the 2027 general elections. Prominent leaders such as Peter Obi of the Labour Party, former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi are among those driving coalition talks.
Efforts are already underway to establish a united platform for contesting the 2027 elections.
