More than 50 people who survived the recent attack on Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State are currently receiving treatment in hospitals for injuries sustained during the assault.
The attackers inflicted varying degrees of harm on the victims, including gunshot wounds, during the deadly raid that also spread to the neighbouring Nuku community.
The senator representing Kwara North Senatorial District, Sadiq Umar, visited some of the injured survivors, expressed sympathy, and described the incident as heartbreaking. He prayed for their quick recovery and assured them of his continued support throughout their treatment and healing process.
Senator Umar praised President Bola Tinubu for deploying security personnel under Operation Savannah Shield to restore calm and track down those responsible. He also commended Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his swift response, particularly his directive to the State Emergency Management Agency to distribute relief materials to affected residents.
The lawmaker called for sustained security operations across Kwara North, noting the district’s persistent security challenges. He urged residents to remain united, hopeful, and prayerful, while reaffirming his commitment to their welfare and to lasting peace in the area.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police has ordered the immediate deployment of tactical, operational, and intelligence assets to Kaiama Local Government Area. The Nigerian Police Force condemned the attack as tragic and confirmed that security agencies have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.
Gunmen attacked Woro and Nuku communities on Tuesday, killing at least 75 people, burning shops and a traditional ruler’s residence, and forcing many residents to flee. Although some reports suggested higher casualties, the Kwara State Police Command confirmed on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief that the death toll stands at 75.
Governor AbdulRazaq described the incident as a “pure massacre” and confirmed that authorities had already buried at least 75 victims. President Tinubu has also ordered the deployment of an army battalion to reinforce security in the state under Operation Savannah Shield. Political groups, including the Northern States Governors’ Forum, have condemned the killings as barbaric.
