Family members, friends, colleagues and supporters on Tuesday gathered in Ketu, Lagos, to pay their last respects to the late Organising Secretary of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaya.
Videos circulating on social media showed emotional scenes as mourners turned out in large numbers for the burial of the union leader.
Ajiboye died after succumbing to gunshot wounds sustained when unidentified gunmen attacked his vehicle in the Fadeyi area of Lagos on Sunday evening.
The Lagos State Police Command has since launched a manhunt for the attackers. Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi confirmed that an investigation was underway to identify and arrest those responsible.
According to sources, Ajiboye had visited childhood friends in Fadeyi before he was attacked while leaving the area. He was rushed to hospital, where he later died despite receiving treatment.
A union member, Taofeek, disclosed that three other occupants of the vehicle also sustained gunshot wounds and remain in critical condition.
Following the incident, photographs of the vehicle riddled with bullet holes circulated online.
Lagos NURTW Chairman, Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, described Ajiboye as a loyal ally, dependable friend and committed union leader whose dedication to the organisation would be remembered.
The killing has continued to spark mixed reactions on social media, with some mourning him as a community benefactor while others pointed to longstanding controversies surrounding transport union politics in Lagos.
Police say investigations into the motive behind the attack are ongoing.
