Police arrest 65-year-old man with over 1000 rounds live ammunition

Police in Anambra State have arrested a 65-year-old man, Akpan Godwin, after discovering 1,100 rounds of live ammunition in his possession in Onitsha.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Saturday. He said operatives of the Rapid Response Squad attached to Akwuzu apprehended Godwin on Friday at Nkpor, near Onitsha, following credible intelligence.

“Police operatives, acting on reliable information, arrested one Akpan Godwin, aged 65, with 1,100 rounds of live ammunition,” Ikenga stated.

During questioning, Godwin admitted to trading in ammunition illegally and identified others involved in the illicit business.

The police have launched further investigations to trace his accomplices and dismantle the wider arms supply network. “Operatives have intensified the manhunt to arrest all collaborators,” Ikenga added.

Anambra has faced rising insecurity from armed groups, with firearms proliferation linked to robberies, kidnappings, cult violence, and attacks by non-state actors. Recent police operations have uncovered syndicates dealing in illegal weapons, leading to several arrests and recoveries of arms and vandalised infrastructure.
