The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 39-year-old man, Udeme Emmanuel Ekpeme, for allegedly posing as a medical doctor and defrauding a woman of ₦500,000 with a false promise of securing jobs for her children at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).
Ekpeme was arrested by officers attached to the Uwanse Division in Calabar South following a complaint lodged by 45-year-old Mrs Edemawan Samuel.
According to the police, the suspect allegedly presented himself as a medical doctor and collected ₦500,000 from the complainant after promising to facilitate the employment of her children at UCTH.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Ekpeme obtained the money through false representations.
Police also recovered exhibits believed to be linked to the alleged offences during the investigation, while the suspect remains in custody.
The Commissioner of Police in Cross River State has ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case and establish whether there are other victims.
The command said the suspect would be charged to court at the conclusion of investigations if sufficient evidence is established.
Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah Akata, said detectives were expanding the investigation.
“The Command is actively conducting a discreet investigation into the matter to uncover the full extent of the suspect’s activities and identify any other possible victims or accomplices,” Akata said.
He added that further updates would be provided as investigations progress.
