The Rivers State Police Command has acknowledged an attack on the Paramount Ruler of the Bangha Community in Khana Local Government Area, His Royal Majesty, King T. Y. Baridam.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Monday, the police spokesperson, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, said investigations into the attack are underway.
The statement explained that the monarch reported to the police on Sunday that his vehicle was ambushed by unidentified gunmen while he was returning from a meeting in Okwale Community.
Iringe-Koko explained that the assailants opened fire on the king’s vehicle along Tekar Sogho Road, leading to the East–West Road in Khana LGA.
The gunmen reportedly emerged from nearby bushes, shattering the vehicle’s windscreen and other parts.
The police spokesperson said the monarch sustained a gunshot injury to his thigh during the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment.
She added that police patrol teams were immediately deployed to the area to comb the surroundings, as investigations continue to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
The State Police Command assured the public that “no stone will be left unturned in bringing the perpetrators to justice.”
The statement added, “Members of the public are urged to remain calm and provide useful information that can aid security agencies in their investigation.”
