Police drop case against Pastor Adefarasin

The Lagos State Police Command has dropped its case against the Senior Pastor of House on the Rock Church, Paul Adefarasin, who recently secured bail after being questioned over a gun-like object seen in his possession in a viral video.

The Command confirmed that after Pastor Adefarasin voluntarily reported to its headquarters in Ikeja, investigators conducted a thorough probe, which included his interrogation and a cautionary statement.

Police findings revealed that the object was a stun gun rather than a firearm.

“Consequent on our findings, the Lagos State Police Command has determined that there are no sufficient grounds to proceed with the matter. The case is hereby discontinued,” the Command announced in a statement signed by spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi on Wednesday.

The viral video, which surfaced in June, showed Adefarasin driving a Range Rover, lowering his window, and interacting with a road user while holding a black object. The footage sparked online speculation, with many alleging it resembled a firearm.

In response, Adefarasin dismissed the claims on his X account, insisting: “That was certainly not a firearm, and at no point did I point such at anyone.”

During a live-streamed Sunday service, he described the public reaction as “hurtful” and “malicious”, maintaining that he neither owns a pistol licence nor carries a firearm. He accused “clickbaiters” of spreading false claims for profit.

However, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, had earlier clarified on Channels Television that using a stun gun to threaten or instil fear in another person could still amount to an offence under Nigerian law.

He explained: “Even under the Firearms Act, if you fashion out anything that looks like a gun and use it to take possession of property, that constitutes armed robbery. Pointing a stun gun at another individual to create fear at that moment also constitutes an offence. The police are acting strictly within the law.”
