Police expose 28-year-old man behind violent masquerade in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has named a 28-year-old suspect, Ifesinachi Ezeolu, as the individual behind a violent masquerade alleged to have inflicted fear on residents of Awgbu community in Orumba South Local Government Area.

This disclosure comes amid widespread public outrage over allegations of assault, intimidation and harassment linked to the masquerade’s recent outing in the community.

In a statement issued yesterday, police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga noted that although the Command acknowledges the importance of cultural and traditional expressions, such practices must not be exploited to justify criminal acts or the abuse of citizens’ rights.

Ikenga stressed that masquerade displays, like all public activities, are expected to remain orderly and law-abiding. He cautioned that any conduct that instils fear, causes injury or disrupts public peace would attract appropriate sanctions.

“The Command wishes to clearly state that the Nigeria Police Force respects and recognises the cultural and traditional practices of the people,” he said.

“However, no cultural activity or belief system should be used as a cover to harass, assault, intimidate or violate the fundamental human rights of citizens.”

He further stated: “The Command also emphasises that masquerade activities, like all public gatherings, must be conducted peacefully and within the confines of the law. Therefore, any act capable of causing fear, injury or public disorder will be promptly addressed.”

The police spokesperson added that investigations are ongoing to track down and bring to justice other persons allegedly involved in the incident.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reassured the public that the Command would work closely with traditional authorities, community heads and relevant stakeholders to promote peaceful cultural celebrations while safeguarding the security and rights of all residents.
