Police launch manhunt for teacher over death of 12-year-old pupil in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a teacher accused of flogging a 12-year-old pupil to death at a school in Adazi-Ani, Anaocha Local Government Area.

Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said officers from the Neni Division responded after receiving a report of the incident and rushed the boy to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

The victim’s body has been deposited in a morgue for preservation and an autopsy, while preliminary findings revealed visible marks of violence on different parts of his body.

Ikenga said the command had activated its Safe School Initiative, with the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, ACP Harrison Oruruo, leading efforts to investigate the incident and track down the fleeing teacher.

“The Anambra State Police Command has activated its Safe School initiative operations led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, ACP Harrison Oruruo,” Ikenga said.

He added that investigators were working to establish the circumstances surrounding the pupil’s death and ensure the suspect is arrested.

“The case is under active investigation, and all necessary steps are being taken to ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.

“To this end, the Command has expressed deep concern over the tragic incident and assured the family of the deceased and members of the public that the Command will conduct a thorough, diligent, and transparent investigation.

“The Command further reiterates its commitment to the protection of school children through the Safe School Initiative.

“It urges members of the public with useful information that could aid the arrest of the suspect to report to the nearest Police Station or contact the Command through its emergency line 07039194332.”
