Police nab 10 for human trafficking in Ondo

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested 10 nationals from the Republic of Benin for their involvement in an alleged illegal human trafficking operation within the state.

Speaking to journalists in Akure on Sunday, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Lawal Adebowale, revealed the names of the suspects as Atouh Joel, Mohamed Amidou, Saibou Akateliwe, Abdul Jahao, and Ndah Severin. Others arrested include Kumpori Ruth, Kumpori Martin, Tatiana Dianne, Martias Sossa, and Ndapola Oba Giov.

Mr Adebowale stated, “At approximately 8:30 pm on 31 July 2025, operatives of the command apprehended the 10 foreign nationals at different residences along Oda Road in Akure. Investigations showed they had entered Nigeria illegally from Benin Republic—some with expired passports, and others with no travel documents at all.”

He further disclosed that the group allegedly conspired to traffic a 29-year-old Congolese man, Nzaou Yelica Christ-Olse, into Nigeria under false pretences.

“They deceived the victim by promising to help him start an online business but abandoned him shortly after his arrival,” the CP said.

He described the incident as a clear violation of Nigeria’s immigration and anti-human trafficking laws, noting that the case had been handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation and prosecution.

Mr Adebowale assured the public that the victim was now safe, in the care of authorities, and receiving the necessary support.

He appealed to residents of Ondo State to assist the police with credible information that could help combat crime across the region.

“We remain committed to ensuring safety and security for all residents through lawful, ethical, and responsive policing. We rely on the vigilance and support of the public in this ongoing mission,” he concluded.
