Police nab six over vandalism, theft of solar street lights in Bayelsa

Operatives of the Bayelsa State Police Command have apprehended six individuals suspected of vandalising and stealing solar-powered street lights across various areas in the state.

The police revealed that the suspects were found with stolen solar panels and iron-cutting tools, and are currently assisting investigators in identifying others linked to the purchase of the stolen materials.

State Commissioner of Police, Francis Idu, addressed the increasing incidents of vandalism targeting solar infrastructure, particularly along the Elebele-AIT Road and other locations in Yenagoa, stating that the suspects would be prosecuted soon.

He further noted that the state government has bolstered police efforts by providing a high-powered, long-range security drone capable of conducting surveillance both day and night to help curb crime.

“Vandalism is sabotage. We have discovered that some criminal elements are venting their frustrations on solar light infrastructure that has sustained nightlife in the state. Those involved are being monitored and apprehended.

“Public infrastructure should not be tampered with or destroyed. It is an investment for the people,” he said.

Commenting on the issue of parading suspects, the CP called for a reassessment of existing restrictions, adding: “We do not support the dehumanisation of suspects, but those arrested with evidence should be paraded as a deterrent to others contemplating such acts.”
