Police nab social media activist over false security alarms in Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Akaninyene Udo for allegedly spreading false and inflammatory security-related content on social media that triggered fear among residents.

In a statement issued on Monday, Police Public Relations Officer DSP Timfon John said the suspect, who lives in Akpautong, Esit Eket Local Government Area and operates online under the name “AK Philo,” was arrested following an investigation into a viral post warning of an impending attack in Eket.

According to the police, the post carried the message, “Eket get ready for us,” alongside a photograph of an armed bandit, causing widespread anxiety across Eket and surrounding communities.

The command stressed that the state’s security situation remains peaceful and under control, assuring residents that law enforcement agencies are maintaining vigilance and implementing proactive measures to protect lives and property.

The statement said, “Akwa Ibom State Police Command has observed with concern the activities of certain individuals who use social media platforms to circulate false, misleading and provocative security-related messages aimed at creating fear, panic and unnecessary apprehension among residents of the state.

“The Command wishes to assure the good people of Akwa Ibom State that there is no cause for alarm. The security situation across the state remains calm, stable and under control, while the police and other security agencies continue to maintain vigilance and deploy proactive measures to safeguard lives and property.

“In line with its commitment to preserving public peace and order, the Command has arrested one suspect, Akaninyene Udo, a resident of Akpautong, Esit Eket Local Government Area, who operates on social media under the name ‘AK Philo.’

“The suspect was apprehended following investigations into a viral social media post in which he circulated a threatening message stating, ‘Eket get ready for us,’ accompanied by an image of an armed bandit. The post generated fear and widespread concern among residents of Eket and its environs.”

Police said investigations have been concluded and the suspect will soon be arraigned in court. Authorities also disclosed that efforts are underway to identify and arrest other individuals who may have been involved in circulating the content.

The command warned against creating or sharing unverified security alerts, fake news, and misleading information, noting that such actions are criminal offences and would attract prosecution.

The statement added, “Investigation into the matter has been concluded, and the suspect will soon be charged in court in accordance with the provisions of the law. Efforts are also ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals who may have collaborated in disseminating the false and inciting content.

“The Command, therefore, warns members of the public against the creation, publication or sharing of unverified security alerts, fake news and other misleading information capable of disturbing public peace. Such actions constitute criminal offences and offenders will be traced, arrested and prosecuted.”

Residents were advised to verify security information through official and credible sources before sharing it and to continue reporting suspicious activities to the police through designated channels.
