Police pull Taskforce off traffic duties in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday ordered the immediate removal of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit, widely known as the Taskforce, from all traffic control and enforcement responsibilities across the state.

The directive, issued by Commissioner of Police Tijani Fatai, is part of wider efforts to improve traffic management and promote professionalism, accountability, and clearer roles among enforcement agencies.

In a statement released in Ikeja, Police Public Relations Officer Abimbola Adebisi confirmed that the decision takes effect immediately and covers all traffic-related activities previously handled by the unit.

While the Taskforce has long been active in enforcing traffic regulations and tackling environmental and special offences—particularly at busy junctions and congestion-prone areas—its operations have at times faced criticism over overlapping duties and enforcement practices.

Adebisi explained that the withdrawal applies only to traffic duties, adding that the unit will continue to perform its other statutory responsibilities without interruption.

She noted that the move is part of ongoing reforms aimed at ensuring that designated authorities handle traffic management, while also improving coordination and reducing conflicts among agencies.

The Command also warned residents against referring to all enforcement officials as “Taskforce,” emphasising that several agencies operate in Lagos with distinct roles.

Members of the public were advised to confirm the identity of officers before making complaints or allegations, especially in matters related to traffic enforcement.

The police reiterated their commitment to protecting lives and property, stating that all operations will continue to follow established laws and best practices.
