The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of the body of a Deputy Superintendent of Correctional Service (DSC), Michael Apepende, from a drainage channel in Calabar.
The body was found and recovered at about 10:30am on Friday along Barrack Road, close to the Nigerian Chronicle House in Calabar.
According to the police, personnel from the Akim Division responded to a report about the discovery and subsequently retrieved the body from the drainage channel.
The deceased was identified as a personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
His remains have been deposited at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for autopsy.
The autopsy is expected to help determine the circumstances and cause of his death.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, said the command had commenced investigation into the incident.
He added that further details would be made available as the investigation progresses.
The police urged members of the public to avoid speculation while the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death are being investigated.
