Police suspend tinted glass permit enforcement nationwide

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the suspension of the enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy in obedience to a court directive.

The policy, which was earlier slated to take effect on January 2, 2026, has now been put on hold.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, the suspension will remain until the substantive suit is heard and determined or the interim order is set aside.

BACKGROUND

In December 2025, a Delta State High Court granted an ex parte injunction restraining the NPF from implementing the tinted glass permit policy across the country.

The legal action was instituted by Israel Joe against the Inspector-General of Police as the first defendant, the NPF as the second defendant, and the Commissioner of Police in Delta State as the third defendant.

The issue has sparked a public disagreement between the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the police authorities over the planned enforcement of the policy.

On December 15, 2024, the police had announced that enforcement would resume on January 2, 2026, attributing the decision to an increase in crimes involving vehicles.

The NBA subsequently accused the police of disregarding a court order barring the enforcement of the policy, describing the announcement as “amounts to executive recklessness” and alleging that the police leadership was “lacking in respect for the court, the rule of law, and due process of law”.

In response, the police maintained that no court order had declared the policy illegal or permanently prohibited the force from performing its statutory duties.

‘POLICE WILL UPHOLD RULE OF LAW’

Hundeyin confirmed that the police had been formally served with the interim injunction restraining the enforcement of the policy.

He disclosed that the NPF had entered an appearance in the matter and filed an application seeking the discharge of the court order, adding that the case had been adjourned to January 20, 2026.

“In line with constitutional obligations and respect for judicial authority, the Nigeria Police Force has entered an appearance in the matter, raised preliminary objections, and formally applied for the vacation of the interim order,” the statement read.

“The court has adjourned the case to 20th January 2026 for further proceedings.

“Accordingly, and strictly in compliance with the subsisting court order, the Nigeria Police Force has placed the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy on hold nationwide, pending the decision of the court.

“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, affirms that the Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in upholding the rule of law while discharging its primary mandate of protecting lives and property.

“The Force will continue to deploy lawful, intelligence-driven strategies to address security challenges and safeguard public safety across the country.”
