Power disruptions hit Lagos, Osun over transmission faults, flooding

Communities in Lagos and Osun states are grappling with electricity outages after separate incidents affected power infrastructure, with transmission line faults disrupting supply in Lagos and flood damage knocking out distribution facilities in parts of Osun.

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company disclosed that a reduction in electricity allocated to its network followed the collapse of the Oshogbo-Ikeja 330kV and Benin-Egbin 330kV transmission lines, leading to load shedding in some of its franchise areas.

The DisCo said, “Some business units may experience loadshedding. Cause: Grid Disruption.

“Osogbo/Ikeja 330kV line down. The Benin/Egbin 330kV line is down. Impact: Reduction in grid allocation.”

It added, “We are in constant contact with the national grid operator and will restore supply as soon as the lines are back. Thank you for your patience.”

Although no timeline was given for full restoration, the company said efforts were underway with the relevant authorities to improve supply.

The latest disruption comes shortly after the Transmission Company of Nigeria declared force majeure on the Oworonshoki 132/33kV and Lekki 330/132kV transmission substations after severe flooding affected the facilities.

The flooding has continued to impact electricity supply in several parts of Lagos, including areas around Lekki, Chevron, Agungi, Ikate, Oniru, Ajiran, Osapa London, Festac and Agbara, where residents reported prolonged outages and appealed for power to be restored.

One resident of Festac, Isi Okwuadi, said, “What is the update on this current power outage, please? Complete blackout for four days running, on 21 Road, Festac. Please give us power to at least pump water.”

Responding, EKEDC said, “Your area is currently experiencing reduced power supply due to a reduction in grid allocation. We are working to restore full supply and will update you as soon as this improves.”

In Osun, the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company attributed outages in several communities to flooding at the Ilerin Injection Substation caused by a heavy windstorm.

According to the company, the incident affected the Isare, Irogbo and Mount Carmel 11kV feeders, leaving communities such as Ifewara, Iwara, Bolorunduro, Irogbo, Ayeso, Odo-Oro, Wesley, Express Area, Ilerin, Irojo, Olomilagbala, Iwikun, Isare and neighbouring areas without electricity.

IBEDC assured affected customers, “Our technical team is working to ensure power supply is restored. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience.”
