The All Progressives Congress has selected a close associate of Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, Usman Banye, as its candidate for the Rimi/Charanchi/Batagarawa Federal Constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Banye secured the ticket during the APC primary conducted on Saturday in Charanchi after two other aspirants stepped down from the contest.
Party leaders, members and supporters had assembled at the Rimi Local Government Secretariat for the exercise.
The remaining aspirants later submitted withdrawal letters, a decision accepted by party stakeholders across the constituency.
Governor Radda, who was present at the event, subsequently lifted Banye’s hand before supporters, confirming him as the party’s consensus candidate.
Earlier, the Katsina APC Chairman, Bashir Gambo Saulawa, stated that the Electoral Act recognises both direct primaries and consensus arrangements for selecting candidates.
According to him, consensus is often preferred when aspirants agree among themselves because it fosters unity and minimises internal disagreements within the party.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the APC Consensus Screening Committee for House of Representatives aspirants in the state, Yakubu Maccido, described the process as peaceful and transparent.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Constituency Consensus Committee, Tasiu Dandagoro, said Banye emerged after the other aspirants voluntarily withdrew in the interest of party unity.
Meanwhile, the APC primary for the Daura/Sandamu/Mai’adua Federal Constituency was still ongoing as of the time this report was filed, amid reports that Yusuf Buhari, son of former President Muhammadu Buhari, was facing resistance from another aspirant, Awual Daura.
