Reps reverses one-week plenary suspension after fresh developments

The House of Representatives has reversed its decision to suspend plenary for one week following a protest by indigenous contractors at the National Assembly.

Earlier on Tuesday, lawmakers had adjourned proceedings until next week after contractors stormed the complex to demand payment for completed government projects, accusing the federal government of withholding funds allocated in the 2024/2025 budgets.

However, just hours after the adjournment, the lower chamber rescinded its decision.

In a statement, Akin Rotimi, spokesperson of the house, said the reversal came after “positive developments arising from engagements and interventions across various levels of government concerning the issue.”

An internal memo from Yahaya Danzaria, clerk of the house, noted that the resumption would allow the leadership to brief members on progress made toward resolving the matter.

The House of Representatives is expected to formally rescind the adjournment resolution through a substantive motion during Wednesday’s plenary.
