Rwanda to take 250 US Migrants

Rwanda has agreed to accept up to 250 migrants from the United States, the Rwandan government confirmed on Tuesday, though it has not yet provided details about who will be included in the arrangement.

The move forms part of the US government’s ongoing deportation efforts. Under President Donald Trump’s administration, Washington has pursued controversial agreements to relocate migrants to third countries, including South Sudan and Eswatini.

This new deal follows the collapse of a previous agreement with the United Kingdom, in which Rwanda was set to receive deported illegal migrants from Britain. That plan was scrapped after the UK government that negotiated it lost the 2024 general election.

“Rwanda has agreed with the United States to accept up to 250 migrants,” said government spokesperson Yolande Makolo in a statement to AFP.

She added that Rwanda would retain “the ability to approve each individual proposed for resettlement”.

Makolo gave no timeline or further specifics, saying, “Rwanda will provide more details once these have been worked out.”
