Several trapped as two-storey building collapses in Lagos

An undisclosed number of people were reportedly trapped after a two-storey building collapsed in the early hours of Monday in Lagos.

The incident was confirmed in a situation report released by Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

According to the report, the collapsed structure is located at 54 Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop, in the Oyingbo area of Lagos.

Adeseye said that a team from the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station was immediately deployed to the scene following a distress call received at about 12:20 a.m. on Monday.

The agency stated that the building, which had earlier shown signs of distress, gave way while residents were still inside.

“It is an ongoing rescue involving an existing two-storey building which has reportedly been marked in distress before collapsing on the occupants,” the statement said.

So far, 15 people — including seven men, four women, and four children — have been rescued with varying degrees of injuries. They have been taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Ebute-Metta and the General Hospital, Odan, on Lagos Island.

As of the time of filing this report, rescue operations were still ongoing.

Building collapses have become an all-too-common tragedy in Nigeria, particularly in Lagos. Such incidents are often linked to poor regulatory enforcement, the use of substandard materials, and inadequate building inspections.

One of the most notable cases occurred in November 2021, when a luxury high-rise under construction in the Ikoyi area collapsed, killing at least 42 people. Investigations revealed that the building had exceeded its approved floors.

Similarly, in September 2025, another four-storey building under construction collapsed in the Yaba district of Lagos, leaving several people dead and others trapped under the rubble.
