Sokoto Assembly approves two commissioner-nominees

The Sokoto State House of Assembly on Thursday approved the appointment of two commissioner-nominees submitted by Governor Ahmed Aliyu.

The approval came after the nominees were screened during the Assembly’s plenary session.

Presenting the motion for their confirmation, the Majority Leader, Bello Idris (APC-Gwadabawa North), said the governor forwarded the nominees’ names in accordance with Section 192 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

He stated that the nominees had demonstrated competence and integrity, expressing confidence that they would support the administration’s commitment to effective governance and service delivery in the state.

Following their screening by the Committee of the Whole House, the Speaker, Tukur Bala, put the confirmation to a voice vote, which received unanimous approval from lawmakers.

The two nominees confirmed as commissioners and members of the Sokoto State Executive Council are Alhaji Nura Tangaza and Dr Bashir Achida.

Speaking after their confirmation, the commissioners-designate thanked the governor and the Assembly for the confidence reposed in them and pledged to support efforts aimed at improving the welfare of residents and advancing development across the state.

Meanwhile, the Assembly adopted the legislative calendar for the Fourth Session of the 10th Assembly, spanning June 23, 2026, to May 27, 2027.

While presenting the schedule, Idris explained that it was drafted in line with Section 104 of the Constitution, which stipulates that a state House of Assembly must sit for at least 181 days within a legislative year.

He noted that the proposed calendar provides for a total of 184 sitting days.

The timetable was subsequently approved through a voice vote conducted by the Speaker.
