The Sokoto State Government has sanctioned N1.759bn for the purchase of 1,000 Bajaj motorcycles to support security agencies in tackling banditry and improving operations across the state.
The decision was reached during the sixth regular meeting of the Sokoto State Executive Council for 2026, presided over by the Deputy Governor, Idris Muhammad Gobir.
A statement released on Thursday by the Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Abubakar Bawa, said the motorcycles would add to the 62 armoured vehicles recently acquired by the state at a cost of N27bn and handed over to security agencies.
The government explained that the motorcycles would make it easier for security personnel to reach remote areas, particularly communities and terrains affected by bandit attacks.
Bawa said the purchase was part of the administration’s wider effort to equip security agencies with the logistics required to confront criminal activities more effectively.
He quoted the council as stressing the importance of strengthening security operations, saying, “The procurement of the 1,000 motorcycles is aimed at complementing the recently procured armoured vehicles and enhancing the operational capacity of security agencies across the state.”
Beyond security, the executive council approved several projects covering education, healthcare, water supply and skills development.
The council approved N723.17m for the renovation of Government Technical College, Runjin Sambo, while N498.99m was approved for the rehabilitation of A.A. Raji Special School.
Another N489.32m was approved for Phase I renovation work at the College of Nursing Sciences, alongside N229.36m for the renovation of male and female hostels at the College of Basic and Remedial Studies.
Also approved was N174.64m for renovating staff quarters and improving the perimeter fence at the College of Agriculture and Animal Science, Wurno.
In the health sector, the council allocated N133.67m for the construction of a perimeter fence at Wamakko Primary Health Centre.
The government further approved N93.88m for vocational training equipment to be distributed across 46 women’s vocational centres in the state’s 23 local government areas.
For water infrastructure, N90.21m was approved for PVC pipes and plumbing materials needed to maintain 142 semi-urban water supply schemes.
Bawa said the various approvals reflected the government’s focus on strengthening security while simultaneously developing infrastructure and improving opportunities for residents.
He added that the meeting, which lasted about two hours, considered issues linked to the state’s security and socio-economic development.
“The government remains committed to implementing projects and programmes that will directly impact the lives of the people and contribute to the overall development of Sokoto State,” Bawa said.
