Sokoto senator quits APC, cites, hardship, insecurity

The senator representing Sokoto East Senatorial District, Ibrahim Lamido, has announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing growing insecurity and the suffering of his constituents.

Lamido made the announcement on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, stating that the decision takes immediate effect.

“I, Senator Ibrahim Lamido, representing the good people of Sokoto East Senatorial District, hereby resign from the APC with immediate effect,” he said.

He explained that his resignation was prompted by what he described as the party’s failure to adequately protect the people he represents and address their challenges.

“My decision is based on the party’s failure to safeguard the people I represent and the hardship currently being faced by them.

“This defection is primarily in the interest of the people I represent,” he added.

The lawmaker did not disclose his next political move or whether he intends to join another party.

He had earlier pointed to persistent insecurity and bandit attacks in his constituency as the key reason behind his planned exit from the ruling party. Several communities, he noted, have been attacked, leaving residents displaced and livelihoods destroyed.

Speaking with journalists in Sokoto, Lamido attributed his decision to the worsening security situation in Sokoto East and what he described as an inadequate government response.

He stressed that his move was driven by the concerns of his constituents rather than personal or political ambition, adding that repeated efforts to draw federal attention to the crisis had produced little result.

“My people are enduring untold hardship. Bandits have destroyed entire communities, and I cannot remain in a system that has failed to demonstrate sufficient commitment to resolving this crisis,” Lamido stated.

Following consultations with supporters, political allies, and community leaders, he said there was a consensus to leave the APC in search of a platform that prioritises security and grassroots development.

Lamido emphasised that protecting lives and property is the primary responsibility of government and urged authorities to intensify efforts to tackle banditry and restore peace in Sokoto State and other affected northern regions, warning that continued inaction could worsen the humanitarian situation.
