Sokoto varsity fires staff over “NYSC mobilisation fraud”

The Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, has terminated a staff member, Malam Ahmed, for his alleged role in the illegal mobilisation of ineligible students for the National Youth Service Corps.

The decision was reached during the university’s 176th Governing Council meeting on April 1, 2026, as stated in a special bulletin released by the institution.

The university explained that the dismissed employee, who was previously part of the Registry Department, was found guilty of misconduct involving the unauthorised uploading of names of students who did not meet the requirements for NYSC mobilisation.

Confirming the action, the university’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Ismaila Mohammed Yauri, said in a statement to newsmen on Friday that the move demonstrates the institution’s firm stance against misconduct.

“The Governing Council approved the dismissal of Malam Garba Ahmed after he was found guilty of illegally uploading unqualified students for NYSC mobilisation,” Yauri stated.

He further added that the dismissal is effective immediately from the date of the Council’s decision.

“The university maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards acts of serious or gross misconduct,” he emphasized, noting that due process was observed in making the decision.

This incident highlights growing concerns in Nigeria’s higher education sector regarding irregularities in student records and NYSC mobilisation processes, with institutions under increasing pressure to uphold integrity and accountability.

University officials reaffirmed their commitment to transparency, warning that any staff engaged in similar misconduct would face strict disciplinary measures.
