In a move aimed at reforming the state’s administrative system, Chukwuma Soludo has indicated plans to restructure the workforce following an unannounced inspection of the State Secretariat in Awka.
The governor carried out the surprise visit on Thursday to assess workers’ punctuality, discipline, and overall commitment to their duties.
While touring different ministries and departments, Soludo interacted directly with staff to evaluate the existing work culture within the civil service.
Giving an honest assessment of what he observed, the governor described the situation as a mix of “the good, the bad and the ugly.”
He also praised what he termed the “good people” in the system—dedicated civil servants who consistently uphold professionalism and adhere to official working hours—emphasizing that their dedication is vital to the government’s development goals.
Speaking to the workforce, Soludo warned that employees who fail to meet expectations or align with the administration’s vision would be removed from service.
Addressing issues of lateness and absenteeism, he said, “Those who fail to meet time-keeping standards will be shown the way out. The era of lacklustre performance and entitlement in the civil service has come to an end.
“We are committed to building a civil service that is agile, effective and efficient. To achieve this, the administration is prioritising three key pillars of reform, including the deployment of technology through digital workflows to enhance speed and transparency.
“We are also strengthening supervision and evaluation by implementing rigorous performance tracking to ensure accountability at all levels, as well as sustaining infrastructural improvements to provide a conducive working environment.
“We have invested significantly in this place. The ongoing infrastructural upgrades must be reciprocated with a renewed sense of duty and productivity from the workforce,” he said.
According to the governor, the visit reflects the administration’s determination to transform the state bureaucracy into a more efficient and results-driven system capable of delivering good governance.
He added that by combining technological innovation with strict discipline, the government aims to ensure the civil service effectively delivers the dividends of democracy to the people of Anambra State.
