Speaker Abbas’ aide dumps APC for ADC, announces bid for senate

In a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 elections, Godfrey Gaiya, Special Assistant on Political Matters (North West) to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has left the ruling All Progressives Congress to join the opposition ADC.

Gaiya, who previously served as Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, confirmed his defection in an exclusive interview with PUNCH Online on Thursday, stating that he will contest for the Kaduna South Senatorial seat.

“My decision to join the ADC was carefully considered. It reflects consultations with my supporters and constituents who desire a credible alternative that prioritises people’s welfare, peace, and development,” Gaiya said.

He described the move as principle-driven rather than motivated by personal grievances, emphasizing that the ADC offers a platform for Nigerians seeking a break from “politics of exclusion and unfulfilled promises.”

Gaiya noted that contesting the Kaduna South Senate seat would allow him to address the socio-economic challenges affecting his constituents more effectively.

While expressing gratitude to the APC leadership for past opportunities, he highlighted that the future of democracy depends on building stronger institutions and inclusive political platforms.

Political observers view Gaiya’s defection as early maneuvering ahead of the 2027 general elections, with parties repositioning to consolidate support and attract influential figures.

His move also reflects a broader trend in Kaduna State, where lawmakers and aides are realigning to improve their electoral prospects.

With the 2027 polls approaching, defections like Gaiya’s could reshape the political landscape, especially in key senatorial districts such as Kaduna South, historically dominated by the APC.
