The Transmission Company of Nigeria has declared Force Majeure on the 132kV Birnin Kebbi–Niamey Transmission Line after three of its towers were brought down at Chibike Village.
The disruption occurred on August 26, 2026, at 5:38pm when the line tripped. An attempt to restore the connection through a trial reclosure at 6:03pm was unsuccessful as the line tripped again almost immediately.
Following the incident, TCN sent its linesmen to inspect the affected section. The team confirmed that transmission towers T109, T110 and T111 had collapsed.
The company linked the damage to severe weather conditions, particularly heavy rainfall and strong winds recorded in the area.
“The collapse of the three transmission towers has affected bulk power transmission to Niamey through the line,” the company said.
TCN said it had commenced steps to repair the damaged infrastructure, adding that workers and necessary resources had already been moved to the site.
“TCN has mobilised personnel and resources to the site and will ensure that all hands are on deck to facilitate the speedy rehabilitation of the collapsed towers and return the line to service in the shortest possible time,” it said.
The company also apologised to electricity users in Niamey over the interruption and assured them that restoration efforts were ongoing.
“We regret the inconvenience this may cause to our customers in Niamey and assure that every effort is being made to restore normal supply promptly,” TCN said.
