Teachers suspend 3-months strike in Abuja

Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have called off their strike, which had lasted over three months, and will resume work on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

The FCT branch of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) announced the suspension in a communiqué issued after an emergency meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to the union, the decision came after the payment of the new minimum wage along with five months of outstanding arrears was credited to teachers’ accounts on July 8.

“All primary school teachers in the FCT are to resume duty on Wednesday,” the union stated.

The strike, which began in March, had paralysed academic activities in FCT primary schools. The NUT said it took the decision to suspend the action after the intervention of the FCT Minister, who met with key stakeholders to resolve the crisis.

As part of the resolution, the government released N16 billion from the Area Councils’ share of Internally Generated Revenue to support the wage payment and cover part of the backlog.

The union said a special committee would be set up within two weeks to harmonise the remaining entitlements and work out sustainable funding.

It, however, warned that it would not hesitate to resume the strike if the government fails to honour its part of the agreement.

While thanking teachers for their patience, the union also appreciated royal fathers, civil society groups, and others who stood by them during the industrial action.
