Tinubu celebrates Bisi Akande’s ‘national legacy’ at 87

President Bola Tinubu has showered praise on Chief Bisi Akande, elder statesman and former national chairman of the APC, as he celebrated his 87th birthday.

Tinubu expressed this in a special message issued on Thursday to honour Akande’s lifetime of service and steadfast commitment to democracy.

He described Akande as a towering personality whose contributions played a major role in Nigeria’s political growth and the strengthening of democratic institutions.

According to the President, Akande’s political path was deeply influenced by Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s progressive philosophy and dedication to public service.

Akande began his professional life as an accountant with British Petroleum before transitioning from the private sector into public service.

He served as Secretary to the State Government in the old Oyo State in 1979 and later held the position of Deputy Governor during the Second Republic.

Tinubu recalled that Akande went on to serve as Governor of Osun State between 1999 and 2003, where he further proved his leadership capacity.

He noted that as interim chairman of the APC, Akande laid the groundwork for the party’s landmark victory in 2015.

The President commended Akande for his leadership qualities, integrity, diligence and sacrifices made in the interest of both the party and the nation.

He described him as a mentor whose counsel, support and encouragement significantly influenced his own political journey.

Tinubu added that Akande’s unwavering support for his administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda continues to be of great value.

He also observed that, at 87, Akande remains a strong voice for democracy, social justice and good governance.

The President concluded by offering prayers for Akande’s continued good health and renewed strength as he celebrates the milestone.
