Tinubu flags off construction of INEC Annex in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu has officially launched the construction of the annex office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, describing the project as a powerful symbol of Nigeria’s commitment to democratic development, institutional independence, and electoral credibility.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony on Tuesday, Tinubu emphasised the national significance of the event.

“It is a great honour and responsibility to flag off the construction of the new annex to INEC’s national headquarters,” he said. “We remain committed to equipping INEC—not just with infrastructure but also with the legal, policy, and financial tools it needs to fulfil its constitutional duties with fairness, excellence, and courage.”

The President stressed that the building represents more than just a physical structure, noting it reaffirms his administration’s resolve to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic framework.

“This is not merely a project of concrete and steel. It stands for the independence of our institutions, the integrity of our electoral system, and the future of our democracy,” he said.

Tinubu praised INEC for its pivotal role in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy, describing the commission as the cornerstone of the country’s electoral process.

“Its duty to deliver free, fair, and credible elections is essential to public trust in governance. That is why such a crucial institution deserves a headquarters that reflects its importance and responsibility,” he noted.

The President added that the new building would provide more than just office space, calling it “a hub for innovation, planning, training, and logistics in electoral management.” He said it also signals “our unwavering support for INEC’s autonomy and continued development.”

He commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for initiating the project, applauding it as a significant move towards democratic consolidation.

“By spearheading this development, the FCT Minister has taken a bold step towards protecting our democratic values. I thank you for your vision, commitment, and leadership,” Tinubu stated.

He also acknowledged the efforts of INEC staff and the FCTA leadership in laying a stronger foundation for the country’s democratic institutions.

Addressing Nigerians, Tinubu said, “Democracy is not a destination but a journey. Let us continue to strengthen our institutions, protect our freedoms, and build a secure future together.”

He concluded the ceremony by expressing hope that the new annex would become “a pillar of democracy, transparency, accountability, and national unity.”
