Tinubu meets Delta Governor Oborevwori after defection to APC

President Bola Tinubu is currently in a closed-door meeting with Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori at the State House in Abuja.

Governor Oborevwori arrived at the presidential villa around 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday for what marks his first official interaction with the President since his widely publicized defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Previously a prominent member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Delta governor drew national attention on April 23 following a significant political realignment in the state. In the company of his predecessor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme, and other political allies, Oborevwori officially joined the APC after a key meeting in Asaba.

Also joining him in the defection were several cabinet members, local government chairmen, and grassroots leaders—making him the first sitting Delta governor to leave the PDP since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.

Following the move, Delta State House of Assembly Speaker, Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, and 21 other lawmakers also switched allegiance to the APC.

The ongoing meeting is widely interpreted as a sign of the APC’s continued consolidation in the South-South, a region where the party has been gradually expanding its influence.

Party insiders indicate that more defections may soon follow, with Governors Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Abba Yusuf (Kano), and Rivers State’s Siminalayi Fubara reportedly in talks with the ruling party.

This wave of political realignments is exacerbating internal strife within the PDP, Labour Party, and NNPP, as opposition parties grapple with the growing pressure from the APC’s widening reach.
