Tinubu warns against building on highway setbacks

President Bola Tinubu on Saturday warned developers against constructing buildings on the setbacks along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.

Speaking at the inauguration of the first 30 kilometres of the highway in Lekki, Lagos, Tinubu stated that the Federal Government would strictly enforce the setback regulations in the national interest.

A ‘setback’ refers to the minimum distance required between a building and a road or property boundary—typically between 3 and 9 metres.

In Lagos, the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA) and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) enforce these regulations to maintain ventilation, privacy, safety, and urban order.

The president made it clear that unauthorised structures built within the setback zones would be demolished without compensation.

“Any development carried out without proper approval will not be compensated. The setback zones have been officially published and we shall enforce them rigorously,” he said.

Tinubu also called on road users to preserve the newly completed infrastructure.

“While we celebrate this achievement, we must all take responsibility for its upkeep. The government builds roads, but it is up to the people to maintain them. I urge motorists and residents to use this facility responsibly,” he added.

Notable attendees at the event included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, Finance Minister Wale Edun, and Minister of Works Dave Umahi. Several governors, including Hope Uzodimma (Imo), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), and Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), were also present.
