Former spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, cautioned that taking transportation money from an individual under the pretense of visiting them, while intentionally failing to show up, can be classified as obtaining money under false pretences.
This statement comes from a resurfaced video originally recorded in September 2025 during her tenure as the Police Public Relations Officer for the Rivers State Command, where she directly addressed women regarding the legal consequences of accepting transport funds without fulfilling the agreed-upon visit.
In the footage, she emphasized that collecting transport fare without following through is a punishable offense akin to the local term “419” for fraud. While her comments reignited lively public debates regarding online relationships and financial transactions, legal clarifications note that criminal liability for obtaining property by false pretense typically requires proof of a dishonest intention from the very beginning, distinguishing it from a mere broken promise regarding future conduct.
Iringe-Koko concluded her service as the command’s spokesperson in April 2026, handing over the role to ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, but her core warning remains centered on avoiding intentional deceit to acquire money from others, regardless of the amount involved.
