Troops from the 12 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have confiscated 108.8 kg of cannabis and detained a major courier along the Kabba-Obajana route linking Ekiti and Kogi.
The development was announced in a statement released on Tuesday in Lokoja by the Brigade’s spokesperson, Lt. Hassan Abdullahi.
According to the statement, “The troops of 12 Brigade Nigerian Army have made a significant breakthrough in the fight against banditry and drug trafficking in Kogi, intercepting a major consignment of Cannabis sativa worth a substantial amount from Ekiti State to Obajana.”
The incident occurred on Monday when soldiers stationed at the Agbede Response Area carried out a routine stop-and-search on a Toyota Camry with registration number DKA 158AU.
The car, driven by the suspect, reportedly had a branded police hat and belt displayed on the dashboard, which heightened the troops’ suspicion.
A detailed search uncovered 10 sacks of Cannabis sativa weighing 108.8 kg hidden inside the vehicle.
Abdullahi said preliminary checks indicate that large-scale drug trafficking of this nature not only finances criminal groups but also contributes to activities that fuel banditry in Kogi and neighbouring states.
He added that the suspect and the seized items have been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kogi Command, for further investigation.
The Nigerian Army, he said, remains committed to supporting national efforts to combat drug trafficking, disrupt crime networks, improve public safety, and maintain a secure environment for citizens.
