Troops rescue kidnap victim, recover rustled cattle after gun battle

Troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF) have freed a kidnapped individual and recovered rustled cattle after engaging armed bandits in a gun duel along the Kano–Katsina border.

The early-morning operation on Sunday took place around the Yankwada area of Kano State, following credible intelligence on the movement of suspected bandits advancing from the Daurawa and Kira areas of Katsina State into Kano territory.

According to military sources, the troops intercepted the suspects at Ungwan Dogo and Ungwan Tudu, where an intense exchange of gunfire occurred.

In the course of the confrontation, one abducted victim, 38-year-old Rabiu Alhaji Halilu, was rescued. He reportedly sustained a gunshot injury to the leg and was promptly taken to the JTF Faruruwa Medical Centre for medical attention.

The spokesman of the Nigerian Army 3 Brigade, Major Babatunde Zubairu, said the swift response by the troops prevented the bandits from fleeing with their captives and stolen livestock.

“Acting swiftly, a fighting patrol was mobilized to the fringe of the Kano/Katsina border. At Ungwan Dogo and Ungwan Tudu, the troops encountered the armed bandits and engaged them in a fierce exchange,” he said.

Major Zubairu added that the bandits were eventually overpowered and forced to retreat.

“The intense firepower of our troops forced the bandits to withdraw in disarray towards Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State,” he added.

He further disclosed that two motorcycles abandoned by the fleeing bandits were recovered during the operation, along with an unspecified number of rustled cattle.

The army spokesman reassured residents that security forces remain alert and proactive in the area.

“Our troops are still on high alert as clearance operations continue to ensure the safety and security of the affected communities,” he said.

Meanwhile, residents of the border communities have welcomed the successful operation and urged security agencies to maintain sustained pressure on criminal elements operating in the region.
