Trump announces immediate India-Pakistan ceasefire

US President Donald Trump on Saturday announced that India and Pakistan have agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire” following US-mediated talks amid heightened military tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. New Delhi and Islamabad have confirmed the development.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also stated, “Over the past 48 hours, VP Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik.”

“I am pleased to announce the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site.  We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace,” he added.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri informed that India and Pakistan have agreed to stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea. He said, “Pakistan’s Directors General of Military Operations (DGMO) called Indian DGMO at 15:35 hours earlier this afternoon. It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea with effect from 1700 hours Indian Standard Time. Today, instructions have been given on both sides to give effect to this understanding. The Directors General of Military Operations will talk again on the 12th of May at 1200 hours.”

EAM Dr S Jaishankar stated, “India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action. India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so.”

Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister & Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed Islamabad’s stance on ceasefire as he wrote, “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Sources cited by news agency ANI said that the stoppage of firing and military action between India and Pakistan was worked out directly between the two countries. The Pak DGMO initiated the call this afternoon, after which discussions took place and understanding was reached. There is no decision to hold talks on any other issue at any other place, they informed.

The announcement followed intense diplomatic activity after India carried out precision strikes on nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) under ‘Operation Sindoor’ on Wednesday, in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam massacre in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed.

The White House on Friday said that President Trump wants the conflict to de-escalate “as quickly as possible”. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt remarked, “The President has expressed he wants to see this de-escalate as quickly as possible. He understands these are two countries that have been at odds with one another for decades, long before President Trump was here in the Oval Office.”

Leavitt added that Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Rubio have both been “very much involved” in the ongoing mediation efforts. “Trump has good relationships with the leaders of both countries,” she noted, adding that Rubio has been in “constant communication with the leaders of both countries, trying to bring this conflict to an end.”

On Thursday, US Secretary Rubio held separate conversations with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. During the calls, Rubio emphasised the need for de-escalation and urged Pakistan to take concrete measures to end any support for terrorist groups. Jaishankar, in his response, conveyed that India would firmly counter any Pakistani attempts to escalate the situation.

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Holds Talks With India And Pakistan Counterparts

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan on Saturday reiterated the Kingdom’s commitment to regional peace, highlighting its “close and balanced relations” with both India and Pakistan. According to a statement by the Saudi Foreign Office, Minister Farhan spoke separately with Jaishankar and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar to discuss efforts to end ongoing military confrontations.

The statement said the Saudi Minister affirmed the Kingdom’s support for regional security and stability and its intent to assist in the resolution of disputes through diplomatic channels.

The talks followed a visit by Saudi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel Al-Jubeir to New Delhi and Islamabad on May 8 and 9. Al-Jubeir’s unannounced visit was part of the Kingdom’s “ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions, end current military confrontations, and promote the resolution of all disputes through dialogue and diplomatic channels,” according to the Saudi Foreign Ministry.

Saudi efforts came amid a rapid escalation in cross-border military activity. Over the past 12 hours, the Indian and Pakistani militaries targeted each other’s installations using missiles, further heightening tensions. Islamabad claimed on Saturday that its three air bases were hit by Indian missiles and drones.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence earlier informed that Pakistani drone attacks on 26 Indian locations — spanning Jammu and Kashmir to Gujarat — were successfully thwarted. The Indian government described the Pakistani military actions as “provocative” and “escalatory”.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, speaking in New Delhi, said India responded in a “measured way” and accused Pakistan of “a wanton campaign of targeting innocent people and civilian infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab.”
