The bodies of three siblings, including 11-year-old twins, have been discovered near a river on a farm around the Owena Military Barracks area of Akure, Ondo State.
The deceased were identified as 11-year-old twins, Joshua and Jacob Jonah, and their five-year-old sister, Blessing Jonah.
The children had reportedly accompanied their father, Samuel Jonah, to the farm on Friday but left for home before he did.
Their absence was noticed when they failed to return home, prompting relatives, neighbours and residents to begin a search for them.
Their bodies were discovered the following day near the bank of a small river on the farm.
Confirming the incident on Sunday, the Ondo State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said an investigation had commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the children’s deaths.
According to Jimoh, the children were reported missing after leaving the farm, leading to an immediate search operation that resulted in the discovery of their remains.
The police spokesperson said the bodies had been released to the family for burial, while investigators were working to establish the exact cause of death.
Jimoh expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and urged parents and guardians to closely monitor children, particularly when they are around rivers, ponds and other potentially dangerous water bodies.
