Two senior terrorist commanders surrender in Borno – Army

The Nigerian Army has announced the surrender of two senior terrorist commanders to troops of Operation HADIN KAI in Borno State, saying the suspects have provided valuable intelligence expected to support ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the North-East.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Acting Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, Capt. Mohammed Goni.

According to the Army, the two commanders surrendered to troops of Sector 2 in Geidam on July 4, 2026, before arriving in Maiduguri at about 7:30 p.m. on July 5, where they are currently in military custody.

The statement identified the surrendered suspects as Munzirs within the terrorist leadership structure, adding that they are undergoing detailed profiling, debriefing and intelligence exploitation.

According to the military, preliminary interrogation revealed that the pair occupied influential positions within the terrorist group.

“They occupied influential positions and possess extensive knowledge of the group’s operational activities, command arrangements and logistics architecture.”

The Army said initial intelligence gathered from the suspects had already yielded useful information.

“Initial intelligence obtained from the debriefing has provided valuable insights into the terrorists’ operational methods, sustainment mechanisms and support networks,” the statement said.

It added that the intelligence would “significantly enhance ongoing intelligence-led operations aimed at locating, disrupting and dismantling remaining terrorist enclaves across the North East Theatre.”

Describing the surrender as another major setback for the insurgents, the military said it demonstrated the effectiveness of sustained military operations.

“This represents another major setback for the terrorist faction and further validates the effectiveness of the sustained offensive operations being conducted by troops of Operation HADIN KAI.”

The Army noted that coordinated land and air offensives, supported by enhanced intelligence operations, have continued to restrict the movement of insurgents, weaken their combat capability and disrupt their command structures.

According to the statement, continued military pressure has made it increasingly difficult for terrorist leaders and fighters to sustain the insurgency.

“Terrorist leaders and fighters are finding continued resistance untenable, compelling them to abandon the insurgency and surrender to troops.”

The military added that the latest surrender further reinforces what it described as the growing disintegration of the terrorist organisation.

Operation HADIN KAI reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the offensive against insurgents, stating that troops would continue to exploit actionable intelligence, intensify operations and collaborate with relevant stakeholders to eliminate terrorist threats and restore lasting peace, security and stability across the North-East.
