UK introduces digital visas for Nigerian travellers

Nigerian travellers to the United Kingdom (UK) will begin using digital visas from February 25, 2026, as British authorities phase out physical visa stickers.

In a statement released on Monday, the British high commission (BHC) announced that e-visas will replace the conventional visa stickers previously placed in Nigerian passports.

“This means travellers will access their visa electronically through their UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account, marking a significant step in modernising the UK’s visa process,” the statement reads.

The BHC clarified that visa application requirements remain the same.

Applicants will continue to submit their applications in the usual manner, visit a visa application centre to provide biometric data, and satisfy all existing eligibility conditions. The only change is the method of issuance: instead of receiving a physical sticker, successful applicants will be issued a secure digital record confirming their immigration status.

The statement further explained that Nigerians who currently possess a valid vignette sticker are not required to take any action, as their physical visa will remain valid until its expiration or when replacement becomes necessary.

“Passports will be returned more quickly, and travellers can manage their immigration status online at any time, from any location,” the British high commission said.

“The digital format offers stronger security, as e-visas cannot be lost, stolen, or tampered with.”

Gill Lever, British deputy high commissioner in Abuja, stated that the transition to digital visas will simplify a key aspect of the visa process, enhance security, and reduce reliance on paper documentation.

Once a visa application is approved, applicants will be able to access their e-visas through their UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account.
