The University of Ibadan (UI) has introduced new guidelines for graduates collecting their Statements of Result and certificates, including a provision for certificates left unclaimed for more than 10 years to be shredded.
A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent in Ibadan sighted the special bulletin containing the guidelines, dated September 15, 2026, on Wednesday.
The bulletin was signed by the university’s Registrar, Mr Ganiyu Saliu, and outlines new requirements for graduates.
Under the guidelines, graduates are expected to collect their Statements of Result within six months of being notified that the documents are ready.
“Graduates who fail to collect their Statements of Result within the stipulated period will pay a non-collection penalty of N2,500,” the university said.
It added that the penalty must be paid before the Statement of Result can be released.
The university stated that Statements of Result would remain valid for two years from their respective dates of issuance and would serve as interim records until graduates collect their certificates.
According to the institution, certificates remain the official and permanent evidence of graduation and qualification.
The new guidelines require graduates to collect their certificates within the two-year validity period of their Statements of Result.
The university said certificates would be available from the date of convocation until one year afterwards.
During the initial one-year period, graduates would pay a statutory fee of N7,500 for the issuance and collection of their certificates.
Certificates collected after the first year would attract additional non-collection penalties.
The university said graduates collecting their certificates after one year but within five years would pay a N25,000 penalty.
Those collecting their certificates after five years but within 10 years would pay a N50,000 penalty.
However, certificates that remain uncollected for more than 10 years would be liable to shredding, according to the university.
The institution clarified that the non-collection penalties are separate from the N7,500 statutory fee for certificate issuance and collection.
The university urged graduates and other relevant stakeholders to take note of the new guidelines and comply with the requirements.
