The United States on Tuesday launched what it described as “powerful” strikes against Iran in response to attacks on three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement posted on X, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the military action followed Iranian attacks on commercial shipping and was intended to impose heavy costs on Tehran.
“The US strikes are in response to Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels that were transiting the Strait of Hormuz and will impose heavy costs for targeting and attacking commercial shipping,” the statement said.
CENTCOM described Iran’s actions as unwarranted, dangerous and a clear violation of the ceasefire.
Although a ceasefire between the two countries took effect on April 8, tensions have persisted in the Gulf region, with sporadic attacks on commercial vessels and retaliatory military operations.
Tuesday’s operation marks the first US strike on Iran since a series of air raids carried out late last month, which Washington also said were launched in response to Iranian attacks on commercial shipping.
The latest exchange underscores the fragile security situation in the Gulf despite ongoing efforts to maintain the ceasefire.
