Argentine President Javier Milei has criticised the United Nations in a speech to the world body on Wednesday, describing it as a “useless organization” populated by “arrogant parasites.”
Milei, who has repeatedly used the UN platform to criticise global governance and its “woke” agenda, accused the organisation of failing to fulfil its responsibility to guarantee collective security and human rights.
He said the UN had instead allowed “chaos, violence and international terrorism” to flourish.
The Argentine president said the UN “has become a useless organization, serving only to feed a caste of fatally arrogant parasites disguised as well-intentioned bureaucrats.”
Milei also accused the organisation of “looking the other way” over Argentina’s claim to the Falkland Islands, a British overseas territory that Argentina refers to as Las Malvinas and claims as part of its territory.
Argentina has accused Britain of violating a UN resolution calling on both sides to refrain from unilateral action in the disputed islands, which were the subject of a war between the two countries in 1982.
“Those who follow the rules receive no reward for doing so, while those who break them face no repercussions whatsoever,” Milei said.
Meanwhile, Argentina and the United States announced a joint initiative on Wednesday aimed at improving Argentina’s infrastructure and connecting it with “vital economic sectors to major Atlantic ports and Western markets”.
The proposed Andes-Atlantic Corridor is intended to facilitate investment in transport, digital infrastructure, minerals and energy, including Vaca Muerta, a major hydrocarbon deposit in southern Argentina, according to a joint statement.
