[VIDEO] Nigerians are dirty people, that’s why there is flood everywhere- Kunle Remi

Popular Nollywood actor, Kunle Remi, has sparked debate after blaming recurring flooding in Lagos on what he described as the poor sanitation habits of Nigerians.

In a video shared on his Instagram Story on Monday, the actor expressed frustration over the heavy rainfall that has left several parts of Lagos State under water.

“Let us call a spade a spade, We are a dirty people. Nigerians are dirty people and that’s why there is flood everywhere,” Remi said.

He noted that the flooding had spread beyond areas traditionally affected, saying it was no longer limited to Lagos Island.

“I saw in the news Gbagada is flooded, even Ilupeju… My friend i do not even know if he is eating well or if he is alive he has been stuck in Agungi.”

Remi urged Nigerians to adopt better waste disposal habits, arguing that indiscriminate dumping of refuse blocks drainage channels and contributes to persistent flooding.

The video, which was widely shared on social media platforms including X, generated mixed reactions. While many users agreed with his remarks, others argued that poor infrastructure and inadequate urban planning are equally responsible for the flooding.

Reacting to the video reposted by Instablog9ja, user #_Temmyyyyy wrote, “This is so true, 80% of Lagos is so dirty and smelly, both the island and mainland whether it’s rainy or not. I don’t think it was as bad as this when Fasola was governor.”

Another user, #OluwatobiTofun1, commented, “Kunle Remi’s comments have sparked debate, with many agreeing that indiscriminate waste disposal contributes to blocked drainage systems and worsening floods. Others argue that while public behaviour plays a role, stronger urban planning, proper drainage infrastructure, and effective waste management are equally essential to tackling flooding in Lagos.”

However, not everyone shared the actor’s view. User #Son_Of_Grace12 wrote, “So dirtiness makes everywhere dey flood? Be like dis one no get sense is there any proper drainage system?”

Kunle Remi has previously used his platform to comment on issues affecting Nigerians. His latest remarks come as several Lagos communities continue to grapple with severe flooding caused by days of torrential rainfall, which has displaced residents and damaged property.

As reactions continue, many people have called on the authorities to intensify drainage clearance and enforce sanitation laws, while also encouraging residents to adopt cleaner environmental practices.
