Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Saturday visited the Festac-Alakija Bridge for an on-the-spot assessment of sections of the structure damaged by suspected vandals.
According to a statement shared on X by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu was accompanied during the inspection by contractors handling the facility, members of the State Executive Council and local government chairmen.
The team assessed the extent of the damage to the bridge and examined its structural condition.
After the inspection, Sanwo-Olu assured residents that the bridge remained structurally sound despite the damage.
The governor, however, issued a stern warning to those responsible for the vandalism and individuals who purchase stolen government property.
“The Governor assured residents of the sound integrity of the bridge,” Akosile said.
Sanwo-Olu said the full weight of the law would be brought to bear on the vandals and buyers of vandalised government property, urging residents to avoid such practices.
“He, however, warned that the full weight of the law would be brought upon vandals and buyers of vandalised government property, urging people to desist from unscrupulous practices,” the statement added.
The governor’s visit came days after he directed security agencies to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible for vandalising the bridge.

He had described the incident as a criminal assault on public infrastructure.
A viral video had earlier shown extensive damage to parts of the bridge, with sections of the concrete pillars broken open and reinforcing steel bars stripped from the structure.
The vandalism was blamed on suspected scavengers who allegedly targeted the bridge for its metal components.
At least 27 suspected hoodlums were subsequently arrested in connection with the vandalism of the bridge linking Festac Town with Alakija, following the governor’s directive to security agencies.
The Lagos State Government has continued to warn against the vandalism of public infrastructure, stressing that the destruction of government facilities puts residents at risk and imposes additional costs on taxpayers.
The governor’s latest inspection is expected to guide further measures to secure the bridge and prevent additional damage while investigations into the vandalism continue.
