Voting has officially commenced in the Anambra governorship election as residents head to the polls to choose their next state leader.
The exercise kicked off around 8:30 am across the 21 local government areas of the South-East state.
Ahead of the election, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) distributed voting materials to polling units.
By 7:00 am, INEC staff and security personnel were already present at polling stations, setting up for the day’s activities.
Shops remained closed and major roads were deserted as citizens came out to cast their votes. In some areas, young people converted the empty streets into makeshift football fields while waiting.
Security presence was heavy, with the popular Onitsha Bridge cordoned off to prevent vehicular and human movement. Helicopters patrolled the skies as security operatives maintained order to ensure a peaceful process.
Sixteen candidates are contesting for the governorship seat, with over two million registered voters expected to participate in the election.
