Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano state has said the state is prepared for the establishment of state police.
Yusuf spoke on Wednesday at the inauguration of the inter-agencies task force on drug abuse and trafficking held at the government house in Kano.
A statement signed by Bature Tofa, Yusuf’s spokesperson, said the governor described the proposed state police as key to improving internal security and community policing.
Yusuf said state police would operate alongside the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) rather than replace it, noting that both institutions have a shared responsibility to protect lives and property and promote peaceful coexistence.
He added that both policing structures should work in partnership to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve response to security threats, and boost public confidence in law enforcement.
The governor said Kano has the institutional capacity, manpower, and political commitment needed to establish and sustain a state police system once the required constitutional and legal provisions are in place.
He reiterated his administration’s support for “every legitimate initiative” aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture and creating an environment where residents can pursue economic, educational, and social activities without fear.
Yusuf said the inauguration of the inter-agencies task force reflects his government’s determination to address the growing challenge of drug abuse and illicit trafficking through stronger collaboration among security agencies, law enforcement bodies, and other stakeholders.
He urged members of the task force to carry out their responsibilities with professionalism, dedication, and integrity.
