“We will never surrender,” Sowore vows to continue fight after release from Kuje prison

The activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has declared that his time in detention will not weaken his commitment to pursuing justice in Nigeria.

In a post shared on X shortly after his release from Kuje prison on Tuesday, Sowore reaffirmed his determination to remain steadfast in his struggle.

“Prison has never broken the resolve of those who fight for justice. If anything, it only strengthens our determination,” he said.

“The struggle continues. We will never surrender. #RevolutionNow #Sowore2027.”

Earlier on Tuesday, a federal high court in Abuja granted Sowore bail in the sum of N200 million with two sureties.

The court ruled that he must provide two sureties, one being a traditional ruler from his community, while the second must own landed property within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The judge also ordered him to surrender his international passport to the court registrar as part of the bail conditions pending the conclusion of the trial.

Following the ruling, the court directed that Sowore be released to his legal team pending the fulfilment of the bail requirements.

The Department of State Services (DSS) is prosecuting Sowore on a two-count charge linked to a social media post in which he allegedly described President Bola Tinubu as “a criminal” on his X and Facebook accounts.

Sowore has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The court had initially granted him bail on self-recognition.

However, on June 16, the presiding judge revoked the bail and issued a warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear in court for scheduled proceedings.

The judge ruled that the adjournment letter submitted on his behalf failed to provide sufficient reasons for his absence.

On June 22, the court ordered his remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre while hearing his application challenging the revocation of his bail.

The court also dismissed Sowore’s request for the judge to recuse himself from the case over allegations of bias.
