Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that he will back whoever becomes the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku made the statement in an interview with DW Hausa, underlining his commitment to party unity and prioritising collective interest over personal ambition.
“We will support and endorse whoever emerges as the flag bearer,” he said, expressing confidence that all aspirants would unite behind the eventual candidate.
He noted that the number of contenders within the party was relatively small and manageable compared to previous contests.
The former vice president highlighted the growing role of young people within the ADC, emphasising that the party has created avenues for youth and women to engage actively in politics.
He also affirmed his readiness to support a younger presidential candidate if the party selects one, stating that age would not be a barrier.
Atiku dismissed fears that internal disputes could weaken the party, asserting that the ADC continues to gain nationwide support.
He further expressed concern over Nigeria’s economic and security challenges, linking rising insecurity, particularly in northern regions, to youth unemployment and limited access to education, while criticising the government’s approach to tackling corruption.
