The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has approved restrictions on the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada, and tricycles in parts of Abuja over growing security concerns.
Speaking during his monthly media chat on Tuesday, Wike said the decision followed recommendations by the FCT Executive Security Council after intelligence reports linked the use of motorcycles to criminal activities, including banditry.
He explained that the restrictions would not apply across the entire territory but would focus on vulnerable areas, particularly within the city centre.
According to the minister, the security council has been directed to identify locations where the operation of okada and tricycles will be prohibited before enforcement begins.
Wike also approved the release of logistics to support the implementation of the restriction once the affected areas are mapped out.
He noted that a total ban across Abuja would be impractical, given the city’s size and surrounding communities, but insisted targeted restrictions were necessary to improve public safety.
The minister also expressed concern over the growing number of beggars and destitute persons in the capital, saying previous efforts to remove them had failed because many returned.
He said the administration would intensify efforts to return such individuals to their states of origin rather than continue bearing the cost of accommodating them.
